The Wordsmith

Wordsmith

A Wordsmith seeks out the power behind words and how their utterance can shape the fabric of magic. There is a shift in the way a spell works with just a change in the inflection of the words behind it. Wordsmiths try to find words that can empower their magic and their infusions as well as how those words can be applied in writing when they enchant magical items.

Tool Proficiency

3rd level Wordsmith feature
When you adopt this specialization, you gain proficiency with Calligrapher's Supplies. If you already have this proficiency, you gain proficiency with one other type of artisan's tools of your choice.

Wordsmith Spells

3rd level Wordsmith feature
You always have certain spells prepared after you reach particular levels in this class, as shown in the Wordsmith Spells table. These spells count as artificer spells for you, but they don't count against the number of artificer spells you prepare.

Artificer Level Spell
3rd Command, Healing Word
5th Hold Person , Shatter
9th Mass Healing Word, Tongues
13th Compulsion, Confusion
17th Geas, Hold Monster

Sonorous Words

3rd level Wordsmith feature
Uncovering words of power and using them to shape your spells is what a Wordsmith does, not every Wordsmith uses the same Words as another. When you gain this feature, you learn two Words of your choice at 3rd level, and you learn an additional Word at 6th, and 15th level. When you gain a level in this class, you can replace one Word you know with different one.
You can use one Word when you cast an Artificer spell of 1st level or higher, and you can use your Words a number of times equal to your Proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Word Options:

  • Abundance (Salus): When you cast a spell on a creature that would heal it, you may roll an additional 1d6 to restore their hit points. The number of hit points you heal increases by 1d6 when you reach 6th level (2d6), and 15th level (3d6) in this class.
  • Destruction (Interitium): The first time a creature takes damage from one of your spells, that creature takes an extra 1d6 force damage. The extra force damage increases by 1d6 when you reach 6th level (2d6) and 15th level (3d6) in this class.
  • Erudition (Dilato): You can double the range of a spell you cast with a range of 5 feet of greater. If a spell has a range of Self it instead gets a range of touch. You still maintain concentration on this spell if it requires it.
  • Harmony (Concordia): When you cast a spell on a creature, that creature gain a bonus to their next ability check equal to 1d4 within the next 10 minutes. This bonus to ability checks increases by 1d4 when you reach 6th level (2d4) in this class.
  • Hunt (Venatio): When you cast a spell on a creature, that creature gains a +1 bonus to their attack rolls until the end of your next turn. This bonus increases when you reach 6th level (+2), and 15th level (+3) in this class.
  • Nihility (maledictio): Whenever you cast a spell on a creature that forces them to make a saving throw, that creature subtracts a 1d4 from the next attack roll or saving throw it makes before the end of your next turn if they fail the spell's saving throw. The die increases by 1d4 when you reach 6th level (2d4), in this class.
  • Preservation (Custodia): Whenever you cast a spell on a creature, that creature gain a +1 bonus to their AC until the end of your next turn. This bonus increases when you reach 6th level (+2), and 15th level (+3) in this class.

Scholar of Voices

5th level Wordsmith feature
Your study of words and voices has granted you the ability to project your voice outwards up to 300 feet. Additionally, you've grown a particular ear for hearing things: You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing.

Word Echoes

9th level Wordsmith feature
Whenever you would use a Sonorous Word you can choose to not expend a use of your Words. Once you do this you can't do so again until you finish a short rest.

Words of Power

15th level Wordsmith feature
As your discovery of Words increases you learn some more powerful options, you learn either the Divine Word, or the Power Word Pain spell. Once you cast the spell with this feature, you can't cast it again until you finish a long rest. Additionally, once when you take a short rest you can regain a number of Sonorous Words you've expended equal to half your intelligence modifier rounded down.
