Primal path:

Path of the Shaman

"A tall, muscular elven woman emerged from the woods, her footfalls rhythmic on the forest floor. "The ancestors spoke of your coming..." she intoned, her voice resonating through the glade. The thugs paused, their bravado faltering. "Oi, boss, who's the broad? Didn’t know they made 'em this big..." one muttered. Before an answer came, the elf began to hum, her voice harmonizing with her steps as if joined by many others. Her body rippled as though struck by an unseen force, her eyes glowing an eerie green. "Eh... Boss... That ain't lookin' so friendly..." a thug stammered. Before they could react, the elf was upon them, unleashing a gout of flame from her mouth."

Shamans are warriors guided by spirits, bridging the gap between the mortal world and the unseen realms. Through rituals and battle-trances, they channel spiritual energy into their bodies, becoming conduits of magic and power. Whether guided by ancestral wisdom, the fury of nature, or the collective memory of legends, Shamans wield a unique blend of arcane might and raw physical strength, striking fear into those who stand against them.

Spellcasting

When you reach 3rd level, you augment your martial prowess with the ability to channel spirits and cast spells. Choose the source of your magic: Tradition, Worldwise, or Storyteller. This choice determines your spellcasting ability for Shamanic spells and the spell list you can choose spells from.

  • Tradition Shaman (Wizard Spell List, Intelligence): Tradition Shamans channel the wisdom of their ancestors, using ancient rituals and arcane knowledge to guide their actions. Every spell they cast carries the power of the past, allowing them to outthink enemies and protect allies with the insight of those who came before.

  • Worldwise Shaman (Druid Spell List, Wisdom): Worldwise Shamans are attuned to the spirits of nature, drawing strength from the land, sky, and sea. They command primal forces to defend the natural balance, using the raw energy of the wild to heal allies and strike down foes.

  • Storyteller Shaman (Bard Spell List, Charisma): Storyteller Shamans tap into the collective memory of the world, channeling the spirits of myths and legends. Through their words and songs, they bring ancient stories to life, inspiring allies and intimidating enemies with the power of the shared history they wield.

Cantrips: You learn two cantrips from the chosen spell list. At 10th level, you learn an additional cantrip.

Spell Slots: The Shamanic Spellcasting table shows how many spell slots you have. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell's level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest.

Spells Known of 1st Level and Higher: You know three 1st-level spells from your chosen spell list. Each time you gain a level in this class, you can replace one of the spells you know with a new one of the same level from your chosen spell list.

Ritual Casting: You can cast a spell as a ritual if that spell has the ritual tag and you have learned the spell. When you cast a spell as a ritual, you cast it over the course of 10 minutes, and it does not cost a spell slot for you.

Spellcasting Ability: Your spellcasting ability is dependent on the origin of your chosen magic. You use this ability whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use this modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a Shamanic spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.

Spell Save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus +

Tantric Rage:

At 3rd level, your rage becomes more than just primal fury; it becomes a trance-like state, allowing you to channel spiritual essence into your body. You gain the ability to cast spells and concentrate on them while you rage. When you enter a rage and are concentrating on a spell or start concentrating on a spell while you rage, you gain one Tantric benefit of your choice:

  • Soul's Balance: You can substitute your Constitution or Dexterity modifier for your spellcasting ability modifier when calculating your AC with Unarmored Defense.

  • Spiritual Guidance: You can add half of your spellcasting ability modifier (rounded down) to your attack rolls with melee weapons.

  • Vital Pulse: You gain temporary hitpoints equal to your spellcasting modifier at the end of each of your turns.

  • Ethereal Infusion: Your rage damage bonus changes into Force damage and the damage is increased by an amount equal to your proficiency modifier.

These effects will last until you lose your Tantric Rage (either by ending the rage or losing concentration). You may choose a new effect every time you enter a Tantric Rage.

Additionally, if a spell requires a spell attack roll and has a range of touch, you can cast it recklessly to gain advantage. You do not lose your rage if you cast a spell during your last turn.

Mystic Assault:

Starting at 6th level, while you are in your Tantric Rage, you can weave your Shamanic magic into your fighting style. When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can forgo one of your attacks and choose one of the following options instead:

  • Shamanic Might: You cast a spell that has a range of touch or an area of effect that originates from you. If the spell requires a melee spell attack, you may make the spell attack as if it were a melee weapon attack roll.
  • Tradition Shaman Only - Mystic Preservation: You implore the spirits of your ancestors to shield and guide your allies. Expend a spell slot and target a creature within 30 feet of you. That creature gains temporary hit points equal to 10 times the level of the spell slot spent. While these temporary hit points last, the target gains a bonus to all saving throws equal to your Intelligence modifier.
  • Worldwise Shaman Only - Mystic Entanglement: You call upon the spirits of the wild to restrain your foes. Expend a spell slot and target a number of creatures equal to the spell slot level within 15 feet of you. Each target must make a Strength saving throw or become restrained. While restrained, they take piercing damage equal to your Wisdom modifier at the start of their turn. The effect lasts as long as the target is no further than 15 feet away from you. The targets can attempt a new saving throw at the end of each of your subsequent turns to end the effect early.
  • Storyteller Shaman Only - Mystic Echoes: You evoke the legends of old to bolster or demoralize. Expend a spell slot to target a number of creatures equal to the spell slot level within 30 feet of you. Friendly targets can add a 1d4 bonus to their attack rolls, while enemies subtract 1d4 from theirs. You can switch one target by forgoing one attack on a subsequent turn.

When you lose your Tantric rage, any lingering effect from these options dissipates as well.

Shamanic Rituals:

At 10th level, your bond with the spirits you channel deepens, granting you the ability to perform Shaman rituals with their help. You can ritualistically cast any spell that has a duration of one minute or longer.

Additionally, when you cast a spell as a ritual, you may treat the spell as if you had cast it at a level equal to your highest spellslot.

Lastly, when concentrating on a spell that was cast ritualistically, you gain one additional benefit of your choice when entering your Tantric Rage. You cannot choose the same effect twice and both effects are lost when you lose concentration or end your rage.

Shamanic revelation:

At 16th level, the spirits grant you knowledge of magics that would normally be beyond your capabilities. You may choose one spell from your chosen list of a level higher than 4th but lower than half your level. The spell must have the ritual tag or meet the requirements of your Shamanic Rituals feature. You may choose another spell such as this when you reach 18th and 20th level.

You learn these spells and can cast each once as a ritual. You regain the use of each of these spells when you finish a long rest.
