"Greeted are you, curious souls and fearless explorers of hidden arts. My name is Varris, and I welcome you to the winding paths of alchemy and the secret teachings of nature. For many years I have explored and practiced alchemy in Palebank Village, a community nestled in the shadow of the harsh Greying Wildlands. Here, where nature exists in its rawest form, I have uncovered countless secrets – some have the potential to heal and protect, others hold powers as destructive as they are fascinating.

I have compiled this handbook from my life experience as an alchemist to guide you on your own path. It contains not only instructions for collecting rare herbs and preparing powerful potions but also profound reflections on the complex principles of alchemy that extend beyond simple recipes.

May it bring you enlightenment and protect you as you explore the mysteries only the bravest dare to face.

I leave you with these words, hoping that you carry the light of knowledge into the darkest corners of our world, always with due respect for the power you can unleash. I remain, your servant of alchemy, your mentor, and your warner

– Varris."

New Class: Alchemist

Alchemists are mysterious masters of sciences that operate on the threshold between magic and natural knowledge. Their art is both ancient and deeply rooted in arcane traditions and the secrets of the natural world. An alchemist combines the discipline of a scholar with the practical applicability of an adventurer by transforming the raw materials of the world – plants, minerals, and magical essences – into substances that go far beyond what the ordinary world has to offer.

Alchemists know how to manipulate, transform, and use the forces of nature for their purposes. They are known for creating powerful potions that can heal wounds, cure diseases, and even sharpen the senses. They are also capable of mixing devastating poisons that can weaken or kill entire armies. Through their deep knowledge of the composition and interactions of substances, alchemists can also create explosive and destructive mixtures that can dramatically alter the outcome of a battle.

But their abilities do not end with the creation of substances. Alchemists are researchers constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible. They bend and break the laws of nature to make new discoveries, often in areas others consider impossible. Their quest for knowledge leads them to dangerous experiments and secret studies, which can result in both great breakthroughs and catastrophic setbacks.

The Alchemist's Research Spirit

Alchemists are driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge and insight. For them, the world is a vast, unexplored laboratory where every stone, every herb, and every creature holds a mystery waiting to be unlocked. This unquenchable curiosity often drives them into dangerous and unexplored areas where they gather rare ingredients and test their theories. Their research goes far beyond simply applying existing recipes; they strive to discover new alchemical formulas that push the boundaries of what is known.

For alchemists, there is no greater reward than gaining new knowledge or creating a previously unimaginable substance. They shy away from neither risks nor dangers when it comes to uncovering the secrets of nature. Whether it means venturing into deadly swamps to pluck a rare flower or negotiating with dangerous creatures to obtain a rare essence, no price is too high when the prospect of new knowledge or materials beckons.

The risk-taking nature of an alchemist can sometimes be tested when they must choose between moral concerns and progress. But for most, curiosity and the pursuit of knowledge outweigh all else. This unwavering research spirit drives alchemists to exceed the limits of what is possible
and explore the unknown, even if the path is fraught
with dangers.

Creating an Alchemist

When creating an alchemist, think carefully about how much the pursuit of knowledge and the need to unlock the secrets of nature shape your character. Alchemists are naturally curious and eager for knowledge, driven by a deep inner motivation that often goes beyond what drives other classes. They see the world as a vast, complex puzzle waiting to be unraveled piece by piece. Their life revolves around the exploration and manipulation of substances, the discovery of new alchemical formulas, and the pursuit of perfection in their craft.

Consider what drives your alchemist: Is he a pragmatic researcher who uses his skills in the service of a higher cause, such as curing diseases or protecting his community? Such a character might be more cautious and focused in his experiments, always striving to achieve useful and practical results.

Or is your alchemist an obsessed visionary who takes every risk to attain ultimate knowledge? Such a character might be willing to cross moral and ethical boundaries to explore the secrets of transmutation, immortality, or the creation of entirely new life forms. This type of alchemist is fascinated by the idea of bending or breaking the laws of nature and is willing to sacrifice everything to achieve his goals.

Your alchemist could also fall somewhere between these extremes, torn between the urge to do good and the insatiable curiosity that drives him ever further. This duality could lead him into moral dilemmas when he has to make decisions that offer both great benefit and great risk.

Alchemy Points

Alchemy points are the core resource of the alchemist, representing their ability to channel and control alchemical energy. These points reflect the knowledge, precision, and concentration required to conduct complex alchemical processes in a short time. Alchemy points can be used in various ways to activate different alchemical effects, such as brewing potions in combat, triggering spontaneous alchemical reactions, or enhancing alchemical mixtures. The number of alchemy points an alchemist has increases with their level, allowing them to create increasingly powerful and versatile alchemical effects as they develop. After a long rest, all spent alchemy points are restored.

Wild Alchemy

Starting at 1st level, the alchemist gains the ability to apply their alchemical knowledge in unconventional and improvised ways. This ability, known as “Wild Alchemy,” allows the alchemist to generate unpredictable effects through spontaneous combinations of ingredients.

Application of Wild Alchemy

As an action, you can spend 1 alchemy point to mix two different potions and throw the resulting brew. The potion explodes on impact, and the effect is determined by a roll on the following table. The throwing range is 30 feet, and the brew has an explosion radius of 9 feet. All creatures within the area must make a Dexterity saving throw against your Intelligence DC. On a failed save, they suffer the full effect; on a success, they take half damage.

1d6     Effect
1     Explosive Mixture: Causes 2d6     fire damage to all creatures within the area.
2     Corrosive Cloud: Causes 2d6 acid damage and     reduces the AC of all affected creatures by 2 for 1 round.
3     Frost Burst: Causes 2d6 cold damage and     slows all creatures within the area (half movement speed) for 1 round.
4     Electric Shock: Causes 2d6 lightning damage     and gives all creatures within the area disadvantage on     their next attack roll.
5     Poisonous Fumes: Causes 2d6 poison damage and     poisons all creatures within the area for 5 rounds.
6     Healing Mist: Restores 2d6 hit points for all     creatures within the area.

Enhanced Knowledge

Starting at 2nd level, the alchemist deepens their understanding of alchemical arts and expands their knowledge of complex mixtures and reactions. This feature grants the alchemist a +2 bonus to their Alchemy modifier.

Recipe: Elixir of Renewal

Starting at 2nd level, the alchemist gains the knowledge to create a special healing potion recipe known as the Elixir of Renewal. This potent brew not only restores a significant amount of hit points but also removes negative conditions that may affect the drinker. Brewing this potion costs 1 alchemy point.

    Elixir of Renewal
    Ingredients: Healing Potion, Blackroot
    Difficulty: Easy

Effect: Restores 2d8 + your Alchemy modifier HP and     removes one negative condition of the drinker’s choice.

Specialization

Starting at 3rd level, the alchemist chooses a specialization that shapes the course of their alchemical journey. This specialization allows them to deepen their abilities in a specific area of alchemy and focus on a discipline that suits their playstyle. The alchemist can choose between two distinct specializations: the Potion Brewer or the Bomb Maker. Each of these specializations offers unique abilities and bonuses, making the alchemist particularly adept in a specific area, whether through brewing powerful healing potions, creating deadly poisons, or constructing explosive bombs.

Ability Score Increase

At 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th, and 19th level, you gain an Ability Score Increase. You can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or two ability scores of your choice by 1. You cannot increase an ability score above 20 using this feature.

Bonus Roll

Starting at 5th level, the alchemist gains the ability to make their alchemical experiments even more unpredictable and effective. When using Wild Alchemy, you can now make a second separate roll on the Wild Alchemy effect table as a bonus roll. This roll costs you 2 potions and no additional alchemy point.

Recipe: Liquid Fire

Starting at 5th level, the alchemist gains the knowledge to create a special recipe known as Liquid Fire. This powerful alchemical mixture ignites a burning inferno upon impact, engulfing both enemies and the surroundings in flames. Brewing this potion costs 1 alchemy point.

    Liquid Fire
    Recipe: Glowcap Dust, Silkweed Seeds
    Difficulty: Moderate

Effect: When Liquid Fire is thrown, it explodes and     causes 4d6 fire damage in a radius of 9 feet. All     creatures within the area must make a Dexterity saving     throw against your Intelligence DC. On a failed save, they     suffer full damage; on a success, they take half.     Additionally, the area burns for 1 minute, dealing 2d6 fire     damage to any creature ending their turn within it.

Improved Alchemy

Starting at 7th level, the alchemist refines their skills and deepens their understanding of alchemical sciences. Your proficiency bonus is added to your Alchemy modifier.

Alchemical Instinct

Starting at 10th level, the alchemist develops a deep sense for the spontaneous reactions of their alchemical mixtures. Through your enhanced Alchemical Instinct, the effects of Wild Alchemy are significantly increased. Instead of 2d6 damage or healing, all Wild Alchemy effects now roll 4d6.

Inexhaustible Supply

Starting at 11th level, the alchemist reaches a level of efficiency and ingenuity that allows them to tap into seemingly endless resources.

Once per long rest, you can prepare the necessary alchemical ingredients for crafting a potion or bomb for free and without consuming any resources.

Recipe: Alchemical Inferno Grenade of Kossuth

Starting at 13th level, the alchemist gains the knowledge to learn the recipe for the Alchemical Inferno Grenade. This destructive creation is the result of advanced alchemical research and represents one of the most powerful weapons in the alchemist’s arsenal. The Alchemical Inferno Grenade unleashes a massive explosion upon impact, engulfing both enemies and the surroundings in an inferno of flames. Brewing this grenade costs 2 alchemy points.

    Alchemical Inferno Grenade of Kossuth
Recipe: Glowcap Dust, Will-o'-Wisp Stem, Emberbloom
    Difficulty: Moderate

Effect: When the Alchemical Inferno Grenade is thrown,     it causes 8d6 fire damage in a radius of 30 feet. All     creatures within the area must make a Dexterity saving     throw against the alchemist’s Intelligence DC. On a failed     save, they suffer full damage; on a success, they take half.     In addition, the affected area ignites, causing all creatures     who end their turn within it to suffer an additional 2d6 fire     damage for up to 1 minute or until extinguished.

Twilight Mist

Starting at 14th level, the alchemist’s alchemical activities begin to manifest in unexpected ways. Through the constant brewing of potions and mixing of ingredients, residues of alchemical substances accumulate in the folds of their cloak. Once per short rest, you can shake your cloak as a reaction, creating a dense 9-feet-wide cloud of smoke around you. This cloud lasts for 1 minute or until dispersed by a strong wind. During this time, visibility within and through the cloud is heavily obscured, granting all creatures within it advantage on Stealth checks and disadvantage on attack rolls. Attacks against creatures within the cloud also have disadvantage.

Perfect Synthesis

Starting at 18th level, the alchemist has further
perfected their skills in Wild Alchemy. Through years
of experimentation and refined techniques, they
can now create their mixtures with a precision and
power far beyond what ordinary alchemists can
achieve.

When using Wild Alchemy, all effects generated
by the mixture now deal 4d8 damage or healing
instead of 4d6. Additionally, a dense cloud forms
at the impact site. Creatures standing in the cloud
at the end of their turn suffer the effect again, but
with reduced damage of 2d8.

The cloud remains for the duration or
until dispersed by a strong wind.

Stone of Life

As an alchemist, you have unlocked the secret of life and can bind a portion of your own soul into a special alchemical stone. This Stone of Life is the result of decades of research and dedication to the alchemical arts. It is a unique, flawless gemstone that glows softly from within, containing your essence.

Once in your lifetime, you can use the Stone of Life to perform an extraordinary transmutation. This transmutation requires no additional use of alchemy points or resources, as it represents the purest form of your alchemical art.

With this ability, you can fully restore a lost companion, loved one, or significant being to life. The Stone of Life restores the person’s body and mind to perfect condition, regardless of how long they have been dead or how severe the injuries were that caused their death. The process is completely painless and returns the person exactly as they were before their death.

Source of Life

Alternatively, you can use the Stone of Life to revitalize a devastated area and transform it into a flourishing, life-giving place. This transmutation heals the land, restores plants, lets rivers flow again, and restores the natural balance, even renewing lost nature.

Specializations

Starting at 3rd level, the alchemist reaches a pivotal point in their alchemical journey. Having mastered the basic principles and secrets of alchemy, it is now time to deepen their focus and pursue a path that reflects their unique skills and interests. Choosing a specialization offers the alchemist the opportunity to refine and expand their talents in a specific area of alchemy. This specialization determines the future course of their development and opens doors to new, powerful abilities that will significantly shape their role in any adventuring party.

Each specialization embodies a different facet of alchemical arts. While some alchemists delve deeper into the art of brewing, creating powerful potions, remedies, and poisons, others choose the path of destruction and focus on crafting explosive bombs and dangerous substances. This choice is more than just a preference; it defines how the alchemist will use their abilities in combat and beyond. Whether it’s about supporting allies, obliterating enemies, or solving problems creatively, the specialization provides the alchemist with the tools and knowledge to realize their vision.

The decision to specialize is a significant moment in an alchemist’s career. It shapes not only their playstyle but also their identity as an alchemist. Whether as a master of brewing or an architect of destruction, the alchemist will become an indispensable member of any adventuring party through their choice. Their specialization enables them to take their alchemical talents to new heights and achieve true mastery in their chosen discipline.

The Potion Brewer

The Potion Brewer is an alchemist who has devoted themselves entirely to the art of brewing. For them, potions are more than just simple mixtures – they are the result of years of research, precise craftsmanship, and deep insights into alchemical sciences. Through their specialization, the Potion Brewer develops an unparalleled understanding of the workings and synergy of ingredients, allowing them to create powerful and versatile potions. These potions can offer healing and protection, enhance physical abilities, or even save a dying companion’s life. The Potion Brewer understands that the right brew at the right time can make the difference between success and failure.

Over time, the Potion Brewer develops the ability to create even more complex and powerful potions, which can be crucial not only in combat but also in social and strategic situations. Their expertise allows them to produce incredible effects from the simplest ingredients. Whether it’s healing potions, enhancers, or poisons – the Potion Brewer can provide an elixir for almost any situation.

Deepened Studies

Starting at 3rd level, the Potion Brewer deepens their understanding of alchemical arts and expands their knowledge even further. This feature grants the alchemist a +1 bonus to their Alchemy modifier.

Economical Brewing

Starting at 6th level, the Potion Brewer automatically produces two identical potions with each brewing process instead of just one. The alchemist’s efficiency and knowledge enable them to make optimal use of their resources, doubling their supplies without additional effort or cost.

Masterful Mixtures

Starting at 9th level, the Potion Brewer can create masterful mixtures that combine two different effects into a single potion. The ingredients for both mixtures must be used. These potions are unique and require deep understanding and skill in alchemy. The alchemist can craft a number of masterful mixtures per long rest equal to their Alchemy modifier.

Alchemical Perfection

Starting at 15th level, the Potion Brewer reaches unparalleled mastery in alchemy. Their deep knowledge and precise craftsmanship allow them to refine their alchemical abilities further. The alchemist’s Alchemy modifier permanently increases by +2.

Potion of Vitalizing Haste

Starting at 15th level, the Potion Brewer gains access to a special recipe: the Potion of Eternal Vitality. This highly complex brew requires a precise mixture of rare and exotic ingredients that only a true master of alchemy can process into such a masterpiece. The Potion of Vitalizing Haste is known for its exceptional regenerative properties and is often regarded as a lifesaver in the most dangerous and hopeless situations. Brewing this potion costs 3 alchemy points.

    Potion of Vitalizing Haste
Recipe: Potion of Speed, Elemental Dust
    Difficulty: Hard

Effect: After consuming this potion, the drinker gains     haste for 24 hours and additionally receives an     extraordinary regeneration ability. At the start of each of     their turns, they automatically regenerate a number of hit     points equal to the Potion Brewer’s Alchemy modifier.

Transcendent Mixtures

Description: Starting at 17th level, the Potion Brewer reaches the pinnacle of their craft and can brew potions with effects that are almost supernatural. Once per long rest, the alchemist can upgrade a masterful mixture (+3) to a transcendent potion (+4) with a legendary effect.

The Bomb Maker

The Bomb Maker is an alchemist who has focused their talents on the art of destruction. For them, alchemy is not just a means of healing or support but a source of raw, explosive power. Through their specialization in crafting bombs and explosive substances, the Bomb Maker has developed the ability to create deadly and precise tools of chaos. They understand the fine nuances needed to control an explosion perfectly and can wield this power devastatingly in battle. Whether against a group of enemies or to remove massive obstacles, the Bomb Maker brings destruction where it is most needed.

In the course of their alchemical experiments, it is not uncommon for a Bomb Maker to accidentally or intentionally create a Homunculus. These small, living creatures are born from the fusion of alchemical substances, essences, and sometimes even a spark of their creator’s soul. A Homunculus, born from the supernatural powers of alchemy, often becomes a loyal companion to the Bomb Maker. These beings, both intelligent and loyal, often reflect aspects of their creator’s personality and develop a close bond with them.

A Homunculus is often more than just the result of an alchemical experiment for Bomb Makers – it becomes a loyal companion that stands by them in difficult moments and supports them in dangerous endeavors. Between the Bomb Maker and their Homunculus, a connection often develops that goes beyond the original creation. What began as an experiment often evolves into a unique partnership.

Elemental Bombs

At 3rd level, the Bomb Maker learns to craft basic bomb recipes. Hit: 1d20 + your proficiency bonus + your Alchemy modifier.

    Fire Bomb
    Recipe: Black Powder, Sulfur Moss
    Difficulty: Easy

Effect: 1d12 fire damage + Alchemy modifier

    Ice Bomb
Recipe: Black Powder, Ice Clump Moss
    Difficulty: Easy

Effect: 1d12 cold damage + Alchemy modifier.

All bombs have a blast radius of 9 feet. Bombs can be crafted during a long rest or on the go. On the go, the difficulty changes from easy to moderate.

Alchemical Creation:
Homunculus

Starting at 3rd level, the Bomb Maker gains the ability to create and summon a Homunculus. This small, living creature is born from alchemical essences and a spark of life that the Bomb Maker bestows through a special ritual. The Homunculus is a loyal companion that accompanies its creator on all adventures. It has a unique bond with its master and reflects the alchemist’s abilities and personality.

The Homunculus as a Companion

The Bomb Maker can command the Homunculus as a bonus action, allowing it to switch between protective and offensive modes. Depending on the mode, the Homunculus changes the type of spells it can cast to either protect its master or attack enemies. The Homunculus can be summoned at any time after a short ritual.

New Backgrounds

A character’s past is more than just a series of events – it is the essence that shapes their identity and gives them their place in the world. Backgrounds are the foundation upon which a character’s personality and abilities are built. They tell the stories of experiences, trials, and lessons the character has gathered along their journey. Each background not only offers mechanical advantages but also provides a rich narrative basis that brings the character to life. Whether as an Alchemy Apprentice who studied the secrets of transmutative arts in mysterious laboratories or as a Small Gardener who discovered the magic of nature in every plant and seed – these experiences give the character depth and significance.

Alchemy Apprentice

The path of an alchemist often begins under the shadow of an experienced master, in dimly lit laboratories filled with the scent of exotic herbs and the quiet bubbling of mysterious brews. As an Alchemy Apprentice, one enters a world full of secrets and wonders but also dangers and challenges. The art of alchemy is not something learned lightly.

"Alchemy apprentices are more than just students – they are seekers, the curious, the restless. They sacrifice hours, days, sometimes even years of their lives to unravel the mysteries of matter, penetrate the laws of nature, and bring the hidden to light. An alchemy apprentice is willing to face the flames of knowledge, plunge into the depths of arcane arts, and question the foundations of the universe. But the true challenge lies not only in learning but in understanding, creating, and mastering. It is the tireless search for the essence of things that distinguishes the alchemist – and every apprentice who embarks on this path must be aware that they are not only learning the craft but also recreating themselves."

Alchemy

Alchemy is an ancient and mystical art deeply rooted in the secrets of nature. It allows the creation of powerful potions, healing salves, and protective oils—remedies that can mean the difference between life and death in critical moments. But alchemy is more than just mixing ingredients; it requires knowledge, skill, and the ability to master the subtle interactions between the forces of nature. A single mistake can be the difference between a life-saving potion and a dangerous explosion.

This chapter introduces the basics of alchemy and shows how adventurers can use their collected ingredients and alchemical knowledge to craft valuable and sometimes life-saving mixtures. Alchemy offers not only opportunities but also challenges that reward a cautious and well-prepared alchemist while harshly punishing those who recklessly delve into its secrets. From the first steps in brewing simple potions to the dangerous refinement of powerful mixtures, we explore the fascinating world of alchemy, where knowledge and courage go hand in hand to achieve extraordinary results.

Whether it’s healing wounded comrades, coating weapons with deadly poisons, or arming oneself with magical oils against the terrors of the world, alchemy is an art that opens up untold possibilities for any adventurer. But caution is advised, as the path of the alchemist is as dangerous as it is rewarding. Every new recipe, every refinement, and every successful roll on the path to mastery brings not only greater power but also greater risks. This chapter will guide you through the basics, intricacies, and secrets of alchemy and give you the tools to begin your own journey into this powerful art.

Basics of Brewing

Brewing alchemical potions requires not only the right ingredients and recipes but also the proper tools and a deep understanding of alchemical arts. Adventurers who wish to dabble in alchemy need either an alchemist’s lab or an alchemist’s kit to create their mixtures. An alchemist’s lab costs 50 gold pieces and allows the production of up to 10 potions during a long rest, while the more portable alchemist’s kit, available for 5 gold pieces, can produce up to 2 potions during a long rest.

To create a potion, the adventurer needs not only the correct tools but also the appropriate ingredients and recipe. Once these requirements are met, an Alchemy check must be made, based on the Medicine skill, supplemented by the character’s Alchemy modifier. The difficulty class (DC) of the Alchemy check depends on the complexity of the potion: Easy potions have a DC of 10, moderate ones a DC of 14, and difficult ones a DC of 18.

On a successful Alchemy check, the desired potion is created and can be used immediately or saved for later. A natural 20 even doubles the amount of potion produced. A failed check, however, results in the loss of all used ingredients without producing a potion. In the worst case, on a natural 1, dangerous consequences can occur that may threaten the brewer and their surroundings.

Additionally, multiple alchemists in the group can work together to increase their chances of success. In this case, a supporting alchemist can grant their Alchemy modifier to the main brewer, provided both have the necessary skills and are working with the same tools.

Consequences of a Natural 1

d10 Consequence
1 Small Explosion: The potion explodes, dealing 1d4 fire damage to all creatures within 2 meters.
2 Liquefied Ingredients: The ingredients melt into a useless mass and become unusable.
3 Unfortunate Mixture: The potion becomes unusable and only produces a foul smell.
4 Unstable Reaction: The potion produces bubbles and fumes, causing 1d6 poison damage.
5 Overheating: The potion suddenly heats up and burns the alchemist’s hands, dealing 1d4 fire damage.
6 Incomplete Transmutation: The potion becomes unstable and breaks down after a short time (destroyed after 1d4 hours).
7 Failed Effect: The potion has the opposite effect (e.g., a healing potion deals 1d4 damage).
8 Stench Explosion: A strong-smelling vapor spreads, forcing all creatures within 5 meters to make a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or be stunned for 1 minute.
9 Corrosive Substance: The potion turns into a corrosive liquid that immediately destroys its container.
10 Uncontrolled Reaction: A loud explosion occurs, and the alchemist takes 2d8 lightning damage.

Researching Recipes

In addition to brewing existing potions, adventurers also have the opportunity to research new alchemical recipes. This requires a deep understanding of nature and alchemical principles, as well as patience and a willingness to experiment. During a long rest, an adventurer can research a new recipe to develop a unique mixture.

To research a new recipe, the player must make a Nature check + their Alchemy modifier during a long rest. The DC depends on the complexity of the desired potion or oil.

An easy check (DC 16) is suitable for simple mixtures like basic healing potions or weak oils. More complex potions with stronger effects or specialized applications require a moderate check (DC 18). Particularly powerful mixtures with extraordinary or rare effects require a hard check (DC 22).

A successful check allows the player to develop a new recipe and use it for future brewing attempts. On a failure, the attempt is unsuccessful, but the player can try again during a later long rest.

Improving Alchemy Skills

A character’s alchemy skills, represented by the Alchemy modifier, are the core of the alchemical craft. This modifier determines how precisely and effectively a character can brew potions, create oils, and research new, mystical recipes. Alchemy is a demanding art that requires knowledge, skill, and the ability to decipher and master nature’s secrets. Anyone venturing into the world of alchemy starts with an Alchemy modifier of +0: a blank slate that must be filled through experience, education, and dedication.

For most adventurers, alchemy is a fascinating but challenging craft that must be learned with care. The path to improving the Alchemy modifier is varied but not without obstacles.

For those who choose the Alchemist class, the path is clear: they automatically gain bonuses to their Alchemy modifier as they progress in their adventures, reflecting their growing mastery of the alchemical arts. These alchemists dedicate themselves entirely to the secrets of this ancient science, and their skills grow steadily as they delve deeper into the knowledge. Their craft is precise, dangerous, and powerful—only they can reach the highest heights of alchemy.

Choosing a background can also increase a character’s Alchemy modifier. Backgrounds such as the “Alchemy Apprentice” or the “Small Gardener” grant the character special insights into nature and alchemical processes that others lack. These backgrounds represent not only knowledge but also a special connection to the world of alchemy and nature itself.

For those who are not professional alchemists, there are still ways to improve their alchemical skills. Targeted training with an experienced alchemist can permanently increase the Alchemy modifier but requires a significant investment of time and gold. This training is no easy task and reflects the effort needed to truly master the craft of alchemy.

However, despite all efforts, the modifier for non-alchemists is limited to a maximum of +5. This limit shows that true mastery of alchemy is reserved only for those who have dedicated their lives to this art.

Potion Refinements

Alchemy offers not only the ability to create potions but also the unique opportunity to significantly enhance their effects through meticulous and targeted refinement. This process is not for the faint of heart, as it requires both a profound understanding of alchemical principles and a willingness to invest precious magical energy and rare ingredients. Adventurers who are dedicated to mastering these advanced techniques can gradually improve their potions, unlocking new potentials that go far beyond their original capabilities. Each level of refinement not only amplifies the potion's effectiveness but also introduces greater complexity and risk. The stakes are high; with each refinement, the adventurer must successfully pass an Alchemy check, the difficulty of which escalates with the level of enhancement being attempted. Should they fail, the consequences can be dire, with the severity of the outcome directly correlated to the refinement level. These outcomes may range from minor setbacks to catastrophic failures, making the pursuit of perfection in alchemy both a perilous and rewarding endeavor.

Basic Refinement (+1)

The first level of refinement is the entry point to the art of potion enhancement. To refine a potion to +1, the adventurer needs the original main ingredient of the potion as well as a 1st-level spell slot or 1 alchemy point. This refinement increases the potion’s effectiveness, allowing it to produce a more potent effect. The Alchemy check for this refinement has a DC of 12. On a successful check, the potion is enhanced; on a failure, the valuable reagents are lost. The consequences of a failure are determined by rolling a d4.

Advanced Refinement (+2)

Advanced refinement presents a greater challenge. To refine a potion from +1 to +2, the adventurer must once again use the potion’s main ingredient as well as a 2nd-level spell slot or 1 alchemy point. The Alchemy check here has a DC of 15. The process becomes more demanding as the DC of the Alchemy check increases. The risk of an explosion on a failure also increases. This refinement requires skill and caution, as the consequences of a mistake are more severe. On a failure, the consequences are determined by rolling a d6.

Masterful Refinement (+3)

Masterful refinement is an art mastered only by experienced alchemists. To refine a potion from +2 to +3, the main ingredient of the potion and a 3rd-level spell slot or 1 alchemy point are required. The Alchemy check has a DC of 18, and the risk of a catastrophic failure increases significantly. However, success results in an extremely powerful potion, far surpassing the effects of a normal brew. A failed attempt can have devastating consequences, including an explosive reaction that may severely damage both the alchemist and their surroundings. The consequences of a failure are determined by rolling a d8.

Legendary Refinement (+4)

Legendary refinement is the pinnacle of alchemical artistry, achievable only by the most talented alchemists. This level of refinement is reserved exclusively for complex potions and requires, in addition to the main ingredient, 2 alchemy points. The Alchemy check for this refinement has a difficulty class (DC) of 20, and the risk of failure is immense. However, a successful check produces a legendary brew. Failure carries the risk of a devastating explosion that affects everything nearby. The consequences of failure are determined by rolling a d10.

Restrictions

Some mixtures are inherently stable and cannot be further improved through refinement. Simple potions can be refined up to +2, moderate potions up to +3, and complex potions can only be refined to the legendary level of +4 by alchemists.

Failure Table for Refinement Rolls

Roll Consequence
1 Unstable Reaction: The potion immediately explodes, dealing 2d6 fire damage to all creatures within 10 feet.
2 Liquefied Ingredients: The ingredients dissolve into a caustic mass, dealing 2d6 acid damage to the alchemist.
3 Unfortunate Mixture: The potion becomes unusable and releases toxic fumes that deal 1d8 poison damage.
4 Overheating: The potion suddenly heats up and explodes, dealing 1d8 fire damage to the alchemist and destroying all nearby potions.
5 Dangerous Reaction: The potion releases dangerous fumes, causing all creatures within 15 feet to take 1d10 poison damage.
6 Failed Effect: The potion has the opposite effect and deals 2d8 damage of a random type to the user.
7 Corrosive Explosion: The potion turns into a caustic liquid that explodes, dealing 2d6 acid damage to all within 10 feet.
8 Magical Discharge: The potion destabilizes and releases a magical discharge, dealing 2d8 lightning damage to all creatures within 40 feet.
9 Devastating Transmutation: The potion turns into a toxic substance, dealing 3d6 poison damage to the user and poisoning them for 1 minute.
10 Catastrophic Explosion: A massive explosion tears the potion apart, dealing 3d8 fire damage to all creatures within 40 feet and destroying all alchemical materials nearby.

Herbalism

Herbalism is much more than just knowledge of plants—it is an essential skill for adventurers seeking to survive in the rugged and untamed regions of the Greying Wildlands. In these wild lands, especially around Palebank Village, grow rare and valuable herbs that play a central role in alchemy. These plants are not only vital resources but also key ingredients for crafting powerful potions, healing salves, and protective oils. Survival and success in this hostile environment often depend on an adventurer’s ability to find the right herbs at the right time.

However, herbalism requires more than just the ability to recognize plants. It demands patience, perseverance, and a deep understanding of the laws of nature. The wilderness does not easily yield its treasures—many of the most valuable plants are well hidden, thrive only under specific conditions, or are naturally rare. Only those who are willing to face this challenge will unlock the secrets of herbs and harness their power.

Basics of Herbalism

Herbalism is an art that requires deep knowledge and practical skills. Adventurers venturing into the untamed wilderness to gather valuable plants must understand the natural conditions and the specific growth habitats of the herbs. An Intelligence (Nature) check determines the success of gathering herbs, with the difficulty class (DC) depending on the rarity and growth conditions of the sought-after plant. A simple check (DC 10) is sufficient to find common herbs that grow under normal conditions, while a moderate check (DC 15) is required to discover less common plants that need special conditions such as light levels or soil types. The search for particularly valuable herbs that thrive only under extremely specific conditions requires a hard check (DC 20) and a thorough understanding of the environment.

The Greying Wildlands feature numerous distinct biomes, each home to its own characteristic plant species. In the snowy forests, where tall trees groan under the weight of snow, herbs that prefer cold and shadow thrive, while along the icy rivers, plants that grow near water can be found. The frozen plains, crossed by icy winds, offer a home only to the hardiest herbs like Windroot. In contrast, the crumbling ruins of ancient civilizations hide magical plants that thrive only near arcane energies. These ruins are often fraught with danger, requiring utmost caution during harvesting.

Additionally, the dense misty forests of the Greying Wildlands, where humid air and dense vegetation dominate, offer unique herbs that thrive in the moss-covered soils and the shadows of tall trees.

In the swampy marshlands, where the ground is treacherous and the water deceptive, special herbs that need moisture and mud grow. The rocky foothills of the mountains contain rare plants clinging to the barren, wind-swept slopes.

The underground caves, hidden deep beneath the earth, harbor rare mushrooms and lichens nourished by the flickering lights of the cave walls.

Furthermore, there are enchanted clearings, magical places that harbor rare herbs that thrive only in connection with mystical energies. Finally, there are the wind-swept cliffs, where hardy plants withstand the sharp sea winds. Understanding these biomes, their specific herbs, and the unique dangers they hold is essential for any adventurer seeking to master herbalism. Only through thorough knowledge and skillful approach can the valuable resources of the Greying Wildlands be harvested safely and effectively.

Techniques and Tools

Gathering herbs in the Greying Wildlands requires not only a deep knowledge of the flora but also the application of precise techniques and the use of specialized tools. The region's harsh and unpredictable environment, combined with the varying rarity and sensitivity of the plants, means that adventurers must be well-prepared and adaptable when seeking to harvest these valuable resources. Depending on the specific qualities of the herbs, adventurers must employ different tools to ensure a successful and undamaged harvest. While common herbs can often be gathered with bare hands, requiring only a gentle touch and a keen eye, rarer and more delicate plants demand a higher level of care and the use of specialized instruments. For simple herbs, careful handpicking is generally sufficient, but even this requires a steady hand and attention to detail to avoid damaging the plant. When dealing with moderately difficult herbs, a sharp knife becomes necessary to cleanly sever the stems without causing unnecessary harm. For particularly delicate, valuable, or stubborn plants, a sickle is indispensable, allowing the adventurer to precisely cut the roots or stems, ensuring that the plant is harvested in its entirety without suffering any damage.

When picking herbs, the adventurer must make a Dexterity check to determine how many herbs are successfully gathered. This check reflects the skill and care the adventurer takes during harvesting. If the adventurer attempts to gather herbs without the proper tools, the Dexterity check is made with disadvantage. This significantly increases the difficulty, as the risk of damaging the plants or losing their valuable components rises. A careless grip or a wrong cut can spoil the harvest, leaving the adventurer empty-handed.

The following table shows the possible results of the Dexterity check and the amount of herbs gathered:

Roll Herbs Gathered
1-5 None
6-10 2 herbs
11-15 5 herbs
16-20 10 herbs
