Whisperfang, Relic of the Silent Hunter

Wondrous Item (Artifact), requires attunement by a Rogue or Ranger

Description

Whisperfang is a sleek dagger forged from dark mithral, its blade shimmering with an iridescent sheen. Runes etched along its edge whisper faintly, inaudible to all but its wielder. The hilt is wrapped in supple black leather, and a faint aura of shadow clings to the weapon, rendering it almost invisible in dim light. Once wielded by an infamous shadow assassin, this relic has become a symbol of precision, stealth, and lethality.

Properties

Fang of Shadows

While attuned to Whisperfang, you gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this weapon. In dim light or darkness, this bonus increases to +4. The dagger deals an additional 2d6 necrotic damage on a hit.

Whisper Step

The wielder can use Whisperfang to vanish into shadow. As a bonus action, you can teleport up to 60 feet to an unoccupied space you can see that is in dim light or darkness. You then gain advantage on your next melee weapon attack before the end of your turn. This ability can be used 3 times per long rest.

Death’s Silence

When you land a killing blow with Whisperfang, you can choose to prevent the target from making any noise (including cries, spells, or alarms). Additionally, creatures within 30 feet must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened until the end of their next turn as they sense the shadowy presence of death.

Veil of the Predator

As an action, you can activate Whisperfang’s latent magic, becoming cloaked in a veil of shadows for 1 minute. While cloaked, you gain the following benefits:

  • You are invisible to creatures relying on darkvision to see you.
  • You leave no tracks or scent, becoming impossible to detect through mundane means.
  • Your movement speed increases by 20 feet.

This ability recharges after a long rest.

Soul Siphon (Curse)

Whisperfang’s whispers grow louder over time, demanding perfection. Each time you miss an attack with the weapon, you take 1d6 psychic damage as the dagger feeds on your frustration. If you fail three consecutive attacks, Whisperfang siphons a fragment of your soul, imposing disadvantage on all Wisdom saving throws until you finish a long rest.

Lore

Legends say Whisperfang was forged by a cabal of assassins devoted to the Shadowfell, meant to serve as a conduit to their dark patron. The dagger bonded to its first wielder, granting unparalleled power at the cost of sanity. While its whispers offer guidance, they also grow more insistent, pushing its bearer toward ever-greater feats of precision and stealth—until they inevitably falter.
