Wizard Subclass:

The Theurgist

"Well, it’s all rather simple, really. A matter of understanding. Like most practitioners, I once believed magic was divided, divine and arcane, two distinct threads in the weave. But that’s a misconception rooted not in theory, but in tradition. You see, the key is to recognize that this division is artificial. Once that’s done, all that remains is a set of fairly straightforward calculations involving the harmonic refraction of extraplanar energies, and a recursive theorem designed to stabilize divine matrices within an arcane casting framework. Elementary, once you’ve done the work..."

--A Theurgist explaining their breakthrough

Most spellcasters abide by the laws of magic, the structured flow of the Weave, the boundaries laid down by the gods, and the ancient distinction between the arcane and the divine. But not all are content to accept such constraints. Theurgists are wizards who have uncovered a hidden truth: that divinity is not an exclusive birthright or blessing, but a formula, complex, buried, but decipherable. Through relentless study and brilliant defiance, they have cracked the code of divine magic, siphoning power from the Outer Planes and bending it to their arcane will.

Subclass Features

Level Feature
3rd Mystic Insight, Theurgic Thesis
6th Channel Divine Energy
10th Divine Supremacy
14th Master Theurgist

Level 3: Mystic Insight

Your studies grant you a profound understanding of the divine and their followers. You gain proficiency in Intelligence (Religion). If you already have proficieny, you gain Expertise.

You learn one cantrip from the Cleric spell list. This cantrip counts as a wizard cantrip for you and does not count against the number of wizard cantrips you know. Whenever you later gain a wizard cantrip known, you may choose that cantrip from either the Wizard or the Cleric cantrip list.

Level 3: Theurgic Thesis

You have uncovered the arcane formulae that bridge the gap between divine and arcane magic. This discovery grants you the ability to study, transcribe, and cast Cleric spells. You record your findings in a unique tome known as the Theurgic Codex.

Theurgic Codex. You gain a special tome called the Theurgic Codex. It is a Tiny object (3 lb.) that only you can read. When you first receive the Codex, it contains 3 1st‑ or 2nd‑level spells from the Cleric spell list. The spells in your Theurgic Codex are wizard spells for you.

Adding Spells. Each time you gain a wizard level, you may add one Cleric spell of a level you can cast to your Theurgic Codex instead of adding a spell to your spellbook. In addition, you can transcribe Cleric spells into your Codex when you find them by spending 50 gp and 2 hours per level of the spell. You can transcribe a cleric spell into the Codex only if its level is one for which you have spell slots.

Preparing Spells. When you prepare spells, you can choose spells from both your spellbook and your Theurgic Codex. In addition, you can prepare one extra spell from your Codex in addition to the number in the Wizard Features table.

Level 6: Channel Divine Energy

You can draw on raw divine currents to enhance your magic.

You have two uses of this feature. You regain one expended use when you finish a short rest and all expended uses when you finish a long rest. You gain one additional use of this feature at 18th level.

You gain the following two options for this feature:

  • Channel Power. When you cast a spell that becomes more powerful when cast at higher levels, you can expend a use of Channel Divine Energy to treat the spell’s effective casting level as one level higher than it otherwise would be, up to the highest level of spell slot you can cast.

  • Channel Knowledge. When you want to cast a spell that is recorded in your Spellbook or Theurgic Codex but that you haven’t prepared, you can expend a use of Channel Divine Energy. Doing so lets you cast that spell, using a spell slot of your choice, as if it were prepared.

Level 10: Divine Supremacy

Your mastery of divine formulae allows your spells to bypass the defenses of extraplanar beings.

When you cast a spell and it affects one or more Celestials, Fiends, or Undead, you may expend a use of Channel Divine Energy to impose disadvantage on any saving throws those creatures make against this casting of the spell. In addition, any resistance those creatures have to the damage dealt by the spell is ignored for the purposes of that casting.

Level 14: Master Theurgist

You have unlocked the highest mysteries of divine magic, seamlessly integrating them into your arcane practice.

Choose one 1st-level spell and one 2nd-level spell from your Codex. These spells are always prepared and do not count against the number of spells you prepare each day.

Whenever you cast either spell using a 1st‑ or 2nd‑level slot, treat it as if cast at 3rd level.
