Slashers

I like to hack games. I like homebrew content, especially when I make it. :P

Robert Lach recently, on FB, said he was hacking Alien to make a Monarch style campaign and I'm so furious (and jealous) that I didn't think of it first. I've spent the entire morning, resisting the urge to sit down at the computer and whip out an Alien-ized Godzilla. So far, I'm resisting. That's his thing and I don't want to intrude on his impending accolades (Its a really, really good idea). Maybe after he's released his hacks, I'll do Kong or Gamera or someone just to dip my toes in to his pond in honor of that genius idea.

But what to do with all this creative enrgy in the mean time?

Alien is a reletively simple system. Its not "easy" to hack, but works remarkably well for just about anything so long as you keep a few things in mind:

  1. Humans don't live long in this/these world(s). The game is made for the protagonists to be squishy.

  2. Death is brutal and instantaneous in a lot of cases. With rare exception.

  3. Sci-fi works great, but I have seen hacks for Jurrasic Park, and I'm aware and secretly salivating to see the aforementioned Godzilla, and Terminator and Blade Runner have papers in the file section. . All have sci-fi flavoring, but basically take place in the modern day.

So what else would work?

  • Friday the 13th
  • Any Slasher flick, really
  • Jurassic World
  • Warhammer 40k
  • Game of Thrones
  • Lake Placid/Pirannah (This could be lumped in with Jurassic World)
  • The Langoliers/The Mist
  • It/Mary Poppins
  • Predator (Not as a 3rd faction for play but as a single antagonist in the vein of the 1st movie)
  • Firefly/Serenity
  • Evil Dead
  • Stargate

Any franchise or movie where humans are hunted and/or life is cheap.

The three main things you need for any hack are:

  • New insta-death, signature attack tables for the monster. Slasher signature attacks are provided here. Its mostly with Jason Voorhees in mind, but it easily adaptable to any of the many Slashers of movies and fiction.
  • New panic/break charts for the humans with reactions typical to that type of movie.
  • A new skill or talent that brigs the flavor of the world to life. In this document we have "Solo Confrontation" rules.

the World of Slashers

Horny teenagers are not Space Marines. Ranged Comat should be De-Emphasized over skills like Mobility and Empathy. Comtech reverts to just Tech. Give the nerds a chance to shine.

The First panic roll of the session should always make the Teenager's situation worse off. If the panic-er has a nervous twitch, they get frustrated and pull the landline out of the wall. If they flee, they drive the car into a lake or into a cell tower. If they go catatonic, then they stay out in the open where the whole group can be spotted and have to be physically carried away. Things like that.

Panic is more frequent in Slasher movies. Instead of 7 or 8, panic starts at 6, so even 1 stress can trigger a panic roll. The Panic options are also tighter. Less options and more of them are bad.

New Panic Option: Solo Confrontation

This is an option unique to the Slasher films. At any time, a PC panics, he or she may opt to ignore the result of the Panic roll and instead confront the creature head on. This almost never works out, but there has been the odd, rare, exception, and the time it takes for the slasher to kill the brave soul, allows the others to get away.

  • At any time a Player would Panic, they may instead opt to ignore the result of the Panic roll and challenge the Slasher to one on one combat.
  • The Slasher will appear to answer the call in d6-2 rounds.
  • The Player gets initiative and gets one attack round (one fast action and one slow action) to do whatever they like, except retreat. If they score a Critical Injury on the Slasher, all Allies that witness the event lose 1 Panic Die.
  • If the Slawsher is able to attack back, then it makes a special attack. It gets +1 to the roll.
  • Allies of the Confronter have 3 rounds to leave, plan, or rally before the Slasher is done with its victim and can proceed after thee rest of the survivor(s).
Panic Roll

Panic rolls in Slasher movies are more freqent and easier to trigger. As I mentioned before the teenagers aren't Space Marines and don't have years of combat experience and training to fall back on.

Result Effect
1-5 Keep it together You manage to keep your terror in check...for now.
6-8 Nervous Twitch Uncontrollable shaking or Uncontrollable sobbing are both included in this. An Empathy roll by an ally can lessen the time of this panic reaction by half. This raises the Stress of all Allies in close range by +1.
9-10 Scream This instantly raises the Stress level of anyone that hears it by +1. If an Empathy roll by another PC or victim is not made immediately after this event, then the person that panicked rolls again
11 Hide/Seek Cover Super fuck this whole thing. You immediately leave the area or room but not necessarily the house or shelter. You hide for 2d6 minutes, until the current panic fades. Roll again. On an 8+ you run into the killer. Roll initiative.
12 Freeze Your are paralyzed with Fear and cannot move until your Panic ends or you take damage. If the Slasher is in the area and is not distracted or re-directed, they will use a Signature attack on the Frozen player.
13+ Flee Panic overcomes you and you immediately leave the area. You will travel 2d6x10 meters in a random direction. Once you have fled, Roll your Panic again. On an 8+ you run into the killer and they get a free use of their Signature Attack.

Critical Injuries on Slashers

d6 Result
1 Nothing You know you hit a vital area. Any normal person would be dead. But not this thing.
2 Home Run The slasher is knocked through a window or through a door. And then disappears. The PCs have D6-2 hours to bind wounds and regroup before the Slasher strikes again.
3 Playing Possum The Slasher falls to the ground, seemingly dead. But its all a cunning ruse. If attacked again or on its next initiative, it rises again with 2 Health.
4 Wounded/stapled Someone gets a lucky attack and the Slasher is stuck or stapled to something by the weapon. It is stunned for d6 rounds and will act only in the most basic way; lashing out if someone comes near. Each round, Player's roll Observation vs Slasher's Stealth. If the Players win they get a plot clue to put down the Slasher forever. If the Slasher wins, the Players take their eye off of him at some point and when they look back: He's gone. With the weapon.
5 Significant Wound The Slasher is hurt. -1 on future Signature Attack rolls for this session.
6 Dead...kinda The Slasher is down. For real. For d6 hours. If you can get rid of the body in a plot specified way, then you are safe. Session over. Make your time count.

Slasher: Jason Voorhees

Jason was a challenged child in the late 60's when such things were swept under the rug or hidden in back rooms to keep the sights and sounds away from the "normal" people. Despite this, and with much help from his Mother, Jason did ok in life. He even got to attend Summercamp at Camp Crystal Lake, in New Jersey, with the help of his mother, who rarely left his side. Jason discovered that he really liked the swimming. He snuck out one night, after lights out just to swim in the water again. It was where he was happy. But after a long day of activities, Jason was tired. He realized this once he swam far away from the shore and his legs started cramping. The pain and shock caused him to start drowning, but there was no help available. The night watch group of camp counselors were off doing sex stuff and paid no attention the the boy drowning in the lake. His mother found him washed up on a nearby beach the following morning, all but dead. She took him and nursed him back to health, all while also nursing a grudge against the employees of Camp Crystal Lake. Until one summer in the early 80's, she took her revenge. She killed 8 people before she was herself killed by the last remaining Counselor. And a few days later, Jason killed her...and the rest is history.

Jason has been killed a number of times and has been mystically revived each time by the forces of darkness. He is some sort of zombie like creature. There is some speculation in mystic circles that he may be a Deadite, but the lack of interviews and comparisons make confirming this hyposthesis difficult.

Jason Voorhees
Speed 1
Health 8
Skills -------------------
Close Combat 9
Survival 10
Armor Rating 8 (2 vs Fire)

Powers and Abilities

Where did he go?!?!

When Jason is not directly observed, his speed is 3.

At the start of a scene, Jason has the option of using his Survival skill to start anywhere in the scene he likes. He tries to stay hidden until he can ambush one or two victims.

Specialized Attacks: Jason Voorhees

d6 Result
1 Ambush Jason lies in wait. Under a bed. In a closet. He rolls Survival vs the PCs Observation. If undetected, Jason will automatically inflict a critical injury to the unwary victim. The next person/people that discover the body get +1 Stress and have to make an immediate Panic Roll.
2 Sometimes he likes the chase: Jason inflicts Critical Injury (any) that results in Movement: Can't run. Only Crawl. He will walk behind the victim for d6 rounds. Each round the Stress of anyone in the area that can hear the victim goes up +1. When the timer runs out. He inflicts Critical Injury # 6 +d6 roll resulting in a result of 61-66.
3-4 Sudden Stabbing: Jason appears from seemingly nowhere and stabs you with his machete. This blow deals 9 base damage and any damage results in an automatic roll on the Critical Injury Chart (CB Pg 100)
5 Herculean act of Strength: Anyone that has dared fight back get this one automatically. Jason uses his inhuman strength to grab the victim. PCs can resist a 10 dice grapple. Failure to escape in 1 round allows Jason to inflict a Critical Injury on the victim. Anyone else that witnesses this inhuman act gets +1 Stress and has to make an immediate Panic Roll.
6 Handy use of farm/camping impliments: Setting aside his trademarked machete for a moment, Jason uses his environment. A nearby pitchfork; fish filleting knife; The sleeping bag or tent you're in; a piece of firewood; or even a bow and arrow from the camp archery range. He attacks with 10 base dice and base 2 damage. All additional successes go to more damage.
