The relentlessly prolific Australian psychedelic rock maestros, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, are set to unleash their 27th studio album, "Phantom Island," on June 13, 2025, via p(doom) records. This highly anticipated release marks a significant and ambitious new chapter for the band, as they delve into the rich, expansive world of orchestral arrangements, blending their signature kaleidoscopic sound with classical grandeur.
"Phantom Island" was recorded concurrently with their previous album, 2024's "Flight b741," but with a distinct sonic departure. While "Flight b741" embraced more rock club revivalist vibes, "Phantom Island" expands King Gizzard's sonic landscape to include a full-blown orchestra across its 10 tracks. This bold move was partly inspired by their June 2023 performance at the Hollywood Bowl, where an encounter with members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic sparked the idea of incorporating orchestral elements into their work.
The band enlisted the talents of British historical keyboardist, conductor, and arranger Chad Kelly to bring their vision to life. As frontman Stu Mackenzie explains, "The songs felt like they needed this other energy and colour, that we needed to splash some different paint on the canvas." Kelly's expertise in classical music, combined with his passion for microtonal music, proved to be a perfect match for King Gizzard's experimental spirit.
The album's tracklist promises an intriguing journey:
Phantom Island Deadstick Lonely Cosmos Eternal Return Panpsych Spacesick Aerodynamic Sea of Doubt Silent Spirit Grow Wings and Fly Early glimpses into the album's sound have come with the release of singles like the title track "Phantom Island," "Deadstick," and "Grow Wings and Fly." "Phantom Island" itself offers a tantalizing taste of the orchestral fusion, beginning with a purely orchestral swell before the band's rock elements seamlessly join in. "Deadstick" has been described as a "dreamlike aviation disaster survival tale," with its music video showcasing a giant cardboard plane crash and a cliff-side dance party. The track's horns layered over intricate guitar riffs highlight the band's continued ability to craft complex and captivating compositions.
Themes on "Phantom Island" appear to continue the exploratory nature of the band's work, often touching on expansive concepts and introspective journeys. The title "Phantom Island" itself evokes a sense of mystery, perhaps of a hidden or elusive paradise, aligning with King Gizzard's penchant for creating immersive sonic worlds.
The release of "Phantom Island" will be supported by an extensive global tour throughout May to December 2025. In a particularly exciting development, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard will be performing the album with a different orchestra in each city during parts of their US, European, Australian, and Canadian dates, promising a truly unique live experience for fans.
"Phantom Island" stands as a testament to King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard's relentless pursuit of new sonic territories. By embracing the rich textures and expansive possibilities of orchestral arrangements, they are not only redefining their own boundaries but also pushing the envelope of modern psychedelic rock. This album is poised to be a monumental addition to their already impressive discography, promising an experience that is both familiar in its eccentricity and groundbreaking in its execution.
