The Illrigger

Diabolic Contract

You sign a diabolic contract with an archdevil who welcomes you into the Order of Desolation. Your choice grants you features at 3rd level and again at 7th, 11th, and 15th level.

Corruptor

Corruption is the primary souce of power of the devils. It is through the temptation and then corruption of mortals that their souls fall into the Nine Hells after death, where they are then exploited as a source of magical power or as raw material to create new devils. There are many ways to corrupt a mortal but, among all the archdevils, few have proven themselves as talented in that cruel and subtle art as Malagard, the Hag Countess.

Most powerful of all night hags, Malagard managed, after centuries of manipulation, lies, and betrayal, to claim the throne of Malbolge, the Sixth of the Nine Hells. Her reign was short-lived however, for Asmodeus saw in her boundless ambition and cunning a threat to his plans. Under strange circumstances, the Hag Countess was destroyed by the the Archfiend's machinations, leaving her crown to his own daughter, Glasya.

However, for a hag of such power, death rarely is the end, and Malagard managed to return centuries later, establishing a new domain in the Lower Planes. The illriggers who serve Malagard rarely do so willingly. Most were deceived by the Countess or her minions and forced into unfavorable contracts. These Corruptors bring misery and ill fate wherever they go. Through the dark magic of their mistress, they corrupt what is pure, cast cruel hexes upon honest folk, and watch as hope slowly fades from mortal hearts, while all their dreams wither away. The Hag Countess delights in such acts of cruelty, petty or great, yet they serve a higher purpose — for the soul of a desperate mortal is easy prey for the corruption of the Hells.

Precepts of Corruption

Corruptors swear an oath to Malagard when they join the Order of Desolation. By following these precepts, they sow grief and misery among mortals, making they ripe for corruption.

  • Misery. Humiliate what is proud. Weaken what is strong. Ruin what is rich. Defile what is beautiful. Debase what is good. Corrupt what is pure.

  • Despair. Lend aid to the weak and the wretched. Gratitude is easy to abuse.

  • Deceit. Truth is but a canvas. Deceive and manipulate to achieve your goals.

Stolen Fortune

3rd level Corruptor feature

You sow misery and misfortune for your own gain. As an action, you may expend a seal and touch a creature you can see within 5 feet of you. The target must succeed on a Charisma saving throw or be cursed. Choose a skill, a tool, or an instrument the target is proficient with.

While cursed in this way, the target loses the chosen proficiency and you gain it in their place. If you already are proficient with the chosen skill, instrument or tools, whenever you make an ability check that uses this proficiency, you can treat a roll of 7 or lower on the d20 as an 8.

The effect ends when the creature is targeted by a Remove Curse spell or when you use this feature successfully again. A creature that succeeds on its saving throw against this feature is immune to its effects until the dawn of the next day.

Hexed Seal

3rd level Corruptor feature

You have learned to cast hexes to corrupt what is good and beautiful, spreading despair among your enemies. When you use a bonus action to place a seal on a creature, you may attempt to curse them. The target must succeed on a Charisma saving throw or be cursed for 1 minute. When you curse a creature this way, choose one of the following effects:

  • The target is charmed by you.

  • The target is frightened of you.

  • The target suffers the effects of the Bane spell.

  • The target is deafened.

  • The target is blinded (requires Illrigger level 7).

  • The target is poisoned (requires Illrigger level 7).

  • The target is silenced, unable to speak or perform verbal spell components (requires Illrigger level 11).

A target cursed in this way can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of their turns, ending the effect early on a success. The effect ends prematurely if the creature is targeted by a Remove Curse spell.

Invoke Hell

3rd level Corruptor feature

You gain the following two Invoke Hell options:

  • Fiendish Sorcery. You regenerate your baleful powers. As a bonus action, you can recover either one expended Infernal Conduit die or one expended seal.

  • Misfortune. You curse your enemies with ill fate. When a creature you can see within 30 feet of you succeeds on an attack roll, saving throw, or ability check, you may use your reaction to impose disadvantage on that roll.

Malagard's Interdiction

7th level Corruptor feature

You learn the following additional interdict boons at the noted illrigger levels. Once you learn an interdict boon granted by this feature, you always know it, and it doesn’t count against the number of interdict boons you know.

  • Twisted Fate (7th level). When an interdicted creature dies, you may use your reaction to burn one of the seals on them to regain an expended Hit Die or Infernal Conduit die.

  • Corrupting Touch (13th level). When you take the Attack action on your turn, you may forgo one attack to expend at least 1 seal and cast Bestow Curse on a creature you can see within 5 feet of you, without expending a spell slot. For every seal expanded after the first one, the level at which this spell is cast increases by 1.
The saving throw DC for this spell is equal to your Interdict save DC.

  • Debasement (18th level). When a creature fails their saving throw against your Infernal Conduit ability, you may expend 1 seal to transform them into a beast of your choice, of CR 1/2 or lower (as per the Polymorph spell). The target remains cursed for 1 hour, until they drop to 0 hit points or until you lose concentration, as if you were concentrating on a spell. If you maintain concentration for the full duration, the curse becomes permanent until removed by a Remove Curse spell.
Once you use this Interdict, you must complete a short or long rest before you can use it again.

Dark Omen

11th level Corruptor feature

You receive partial visions of the future, but they reveal only misfortune and misery. When you finish a short or long rest, roll a d10 and record the number rolled.

Once before your next rest, you can replace the d20 roll of an attack, saving throw, or ability check made by a creature that you can see with this Dark Omen roll.

You can choose to do so after the roll.

Baleful Curse

15th level Corruptor feature

Your hexes channel the weird and cruel magicks of the Hag Countess. When you successfully curse a creature with your Hexed Seal ability, you may now choose to apply two different effects instead of one.

In addition, attack rolls against a creature cursed by one of your Illrigger features can now score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20 on the d20.
